Is social media the new therapy?

Published on June 6th, 2012

It has come to my attention that social media might just be a new form of therapy.  An outlet for people to express themselves, or the ability to become the person they want to be.  I love social media don’t get me wrong, but I have definitely noticed that certain people take a new picture every hour, or that they share the most intimate details of their personal life through status updates and Tweets.

At first it boggled my mind, but then it dawned on me that maybe social media is a form of therapy.  It allows people to write out their thoughts, which is always productive, and you can solicit advice from “friends.”  I mean lets be honest most of people’s followers or friends are mere acquaintances, but it does give a person an opportunity to gather different opinions from a broad spectrum of people.  I wouldn’t call that necessarily an objective opinion, but it does give a person a chance for incite from various people.

So sound off!  Do you think there are limits to how much personal information one should post on social media, or is social media a form of expression?
