Traveling is one of my most favorite things to do! There’s nothing like a stamp in your passport. I decided to stay home this year and not participate in Trinidad carnival, so I definitely needed somewhere to go! So where to go? Well I got an email for a fantastic deal to the Bahamas, so me and the booskie were off : )
We flew on Vision Airlines, which is a new airline that flies directly from Ft. Lauderdale airport to Freeport. I have nothing but good things to say. The flight was a mere 25 minutes, and we were landing what seemed like a few short seconds after we departed. Now that’s my kinda trip. We arrived to the airport and the customs process was easy breezy! No worries. We caught a cab to Grand Lucayan, Bahamas and we were ready for the games to begin.
We arrived super early in the day and were unable to check into our room so we headed across the street to Port Lucaya to check out Zorbas! Now let me just let you know that I am a Tripadvisor queen, so I had done my research. I ordered the coconut french toast and stewed conch. Now I know the Bahamas is the home of conch, but this dish was no bueno. Call me spoiled but I live in Miami, so i know what it should taste like and that wasn’t it. I also was not a fan of the French toast : (
Unfortunately the weather was a touch cold so we headed back to the hotel, found a couch, and relaxed. The lobby is very nice, and there is even live piano music. I went back to the check in desk after waiting for some time and I was in luck, there was a room available. Oh and it’s an ocean view. Perfect! So me and the man headed up to our room. The grounds are very nice and well maintained, and the bell hop was super nice. Our room was doable and had a lovely balcony and view. Let me just say this, the water is beautiful. Really gorgeous! The room was clean but a little outdated, they could stand to be spruced up a bit. There was live music by the pool every day, which I love. Mangos was my fav : )
Now this is the thing, if you come to Freeport be prepared to REALLY relax. Also pay close attention to the weather, because if it’s cold you are out of gas. Grand Lucayan has a lovely beach and a nice pool. However, if it’s cold there isn’t much activity. We did get a chance to play a round of golf at the hotel golf course, but I will warn you the course needs some work. The layout is nice, but the fairways and sand traps are in need of TLC.
By far my favorite dining was Billy Joe’s on the beach! I love fried conch, well actually fried anything, so I went there twice to savor the yumminess. For breakfast your best bet is Willie Broadleaf by far. It’s affordable, consistent, and yummy. The servers were extremely nice. We also dined at Irie’s, which is located on the resort. I had the oxtail which was tasty and my boyfriend had a fish dish which he liked. The service was a little rocky, but the manager was very polite. One night we also grabbed some bites at the Prop Club which was doable. The staff here was by far the friendliest. We also had some drinks at Hammerheads by the pool during the day, which was nice and relaxing.
I would definitely return to the Bahamas. The water is very nice and because I live in South Florida, it’s a quick and affordable trip! Not to mention it’s a great trip for quality time, the resort is family friendly, and it’s a good way to recharge the batteries!
